3 KINGDOMS TERRITORY: ANCIENT ILERCAVONIA
Around 3,000 years ago, the Iberians settled in these lands. Known as Ilercavonia, this territory encompassed parts of what are today Catalonia, Aragon and Valencia, surrounding the Ports Massif, from where the Iberians traded with the Phoenicians and Greeks.
Around 2,000 years ago, the Romans crossed and conquered these lands, following the Via Augusta and the Iber, the great river now known as the Ebro, which gave its name to the entire Iberian Peninsula.
Around 1,000 years ago, three cultures lived side by side in Tortosa: Jewish, Christian and Arab.
A crossroads of cultures. A land of encounters and coexistence.
Around 500 years ago, Alcañiz was governed by the Order of Calatrava, while Tortosa flourished as a vibrant centre of culture and humanism during the splendour of the Renaissance.
Around 180 years ago, Ramon Cabrera left Tortosa and went on to become the legendary Tiger of Maestrazgo, following the capture of Morella during the Carlist Wars.
Around 120 years ago, an ambitious railway project sought to turn La Ràpita into Aragon’s gateway to the sea, linking Alcañiz and Tortosa by rail.
And just 90 years ago, Francoist troops used this railway during the decisive Battle of the Ebro in the Spanish Civil War.
A land shaped by history. A living memory of the past.
Today, this territory has transformed its history into a collection of places and landscapes waiting to be discovered along the 3 Kingdoms Route.
The former Val de Zafán railway line is now a greenway, connecting lands of remarkable contrasts between Alcañiz and Tortosa, between Aragon and the Mediterranean Sea.
The Romans left behind a sea of olive trees, while the Arabs left a rich tradition of water management that still sustains the rice fields of the Ebro Delta. Natural beauty.
The Renaissance and the Order of Calatrava have left a remarkable architectural heritage in Tortosa and Alcañiz, while the statue of Ramón Cabrera watches over the ascent to the imposing castle of Morella. Three cities. Three castles.
And from the Iberians… a land full of secrets waiting to be uncovered: Ancient Ilercavonia.
